Gynecomastia: Recontouring the Male Breast

Gynecomastia, also known as “man boobs,” is a condition characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males, resulting in a feminine breast appearance. It can affect one or both breasts and involve excess breast tissue, fat tissue, or a combination of both.

While gynecomastia can arise from hormonal imbalances, such as decreased testosterone levels and increased estrogen levels, or from certain congenital abnormalities affecting sexual characteristics, it often occurs on its own, particularly in overweight or sedentary boys.

Gynecomastia can be a source of embarrassment and social anxiety, leading individuals to avoid physical activities, socializing, and sports. Surgical treatment can effectively address this concern and restore a more masculine chest contour.

Our preferred approach for gynecomastia treatment is power-assisted or ultrasound-assisted liposuction to remove excess fat and breast tissue. In cases of significant skin laxity, additional skin reduction around the areola may be performed.

Following surgery, a compressive garment is worn for one month to promote optimal healing. For adolescent boys with a newly developed, tender lump around the areola, we often recommend delaying surgery for a few years, as these lumps tend to resolve spontaneously.

Gynecomastia surgery can significantly improve self-confidence and social interactions by restoring a more masculine chest appearance and alleviating the embarrassment associated with enlarged breasts.
